One of the most common questions I get from wedding couples are about great locations for taking wedding photos around Winnipeg. I have my own personal preferences, plus ideas of other popular locations, as well as not so popular. I thought I’d feature a location at a time in a new blog series on photo locations for Winnipeg weddings. First part – featuring probably one of the most popular indoor locations in Winnipeg for weddings photos… mostly because it’s free to book, has a gorgeous architectural interior/exterior and is full of history and mystery. You guessed it: the Legislative Building.
My suggestions to wedding couples who are interested in having the Legislative Building as a location are:
1) book it as soon as you can (call 945-8750)
and
2) make sure your photographer is adept at interior portable flash lighting. The building can be quite dark in some locations, and to get great images, a good light or two is essential to getting those wow pictures.

If you live in Winnipeg, you might remember the day that the mosquito trap count soared to 1,300. It was all over the news. And yes, it happened to be the day that Crystal & Jarrett booked an engagement photo session with me. At Assiniboine Park, in the English Gardens, as the sun was setting, no less. And to top it, all three of us forgot to bring bug spray! Cancel the shoot? No way! It was a beautiful evening, golden light from the summer sun and a couple madly in love. It was perfect! Ok, minus the mosquitoes (which we couldn’t ignore). Poor Crystal – I spent quite some time in post production spot removing huge mosquito bite welts off her skin!
All I can say is that mosquitoes, as annoying as they were, cannot stop a session – it made for a memorable experience and I was happy to be able to laugh about it with the two of them. All the more reason to look forward to photographing their wedding next year. I know we’ll have fun and it’ll be a memorable day, no matter what happens!
Congratulations Crystal & Jarrett, I’m looking forward to what the summer of 2011 will bring. :)

… and here they are, swatting at the mosquitoes and laughing about it. Cute! :

May & June has been busy with weddings, and I’m afraid to say it, but these past few months have felt a lot like the rainy stormy summer of 2009. I keep telling myself it’ll change once July rolls around, and in the mean time, I’ve been enjoying the great stormy blue clouds that this kind of weather can add to photos (as stressful as it might be). Theresa & Paul’s wedding photos worked out great: the storm clouds were looming, but held off long enough for us to get our shots before the downpour came. Theresa’s friends were super organized: umbrellas and even had the van pulled up ready to load us up before we got completely drenched. We then scooted over to my studio in the exchange district to take some more pictures while the rain poured outside. If you’re a bride or groom and in need of an alternate indoor location for your wedding in case of rain, consider my studio : it’s a great place to get out of the rain and still get some great wedding photos! Congratulations to Theresa and Paul! When I met them last year, I knew we were going to be a good match. Easy-going, down to earth, and spunky, this couple even met me at one of my favourite coffee shops: Stella’s on Sherbrook. What more could I ask for? :) Duncan and I had a great time photographing their wedding. Here are some highlights!
