Gabrielle Touchette

Welcome and thanks for visiting my blog! I'm a freelance photographer based in Winnipeg, Canada and I absolutely love what I do. I started my photography business a couple years ago after graduating from PrairieView School of Photography with a diploma in professional photography. What I learned at school was invaluable but I don't believe a diploma is more important than a strong portfolio.

My love of photography started a long time ago with a point & shoot camera, and my passion for this art form continues to grow with every shoot I do. I love photographing people and events and I am captivated by honest emotion and fleeting moments. My first love is the creation of photographic art and I'm in the constant pursuit of capturing the unconventional beauty of life. I believe every photograph should have intention because everything has a story and a purpose to communicate.

When I'm not busy shooting weddings, portraits or events, I teach photography classes at PrairieView and work on art projects for exhibitions with my photographic art collective, f/action.

"To take photographs means to recognize - simultaneously and within a fraction of a second - both the fact itself and the rigorous organization of visually perceived forms that give it meaning. It is putting one's head, one's eye and one's heart on the same axis."

-Henri Cartier-Bresson

cooking, baking and photographing it all…

The trouble with being a photographer and making good food is that it always takes twice as long once you factor in all the photo-taking time. Today was one of those days when, out of the blue, I get this burst of energy and inspiration to make good food. Armed with my Mémère’s pie crust recipe and with my friend Becca’s ingredient list for potato salad, I set out to make my delicious food.

First off, I have to rave where I got some of my potato salad ingredients from today: St. Norbert’s Farmers’ Market. You must go there! Fresh farm food, grown right here, in the beautiful province of Manitoba. My husband and I picked up some small red potatoes, fresh dill and green onions, among other things. Mmm-mmm.

The pie crust had 3 easy ingredients (shortening, flour and a pinch of salt) with a simple blueberry+sugar filling (thickened with corn starch). The potato salad had:

small red potatoes
hard boiled eggs
turkey bacon
green onions
fresh dill
celery
sour cream
hellman’s mayonnaise
dijon mustard
paprika
lemon juice
salt & pepper

Yum yum yum! Bon appétit !

Wedding Photo Locations in Winnipeg: Part 1

One of the most common questions I get from wedding couples are about great locations for taking wedding photos around Winnipeg. I have my own personal preferences, plus ideas of other popular locations, as well as not so popular. I thought I’d feature a location at a time in a new blog series on photo locations for Winnipeg weddings. First part – featuring probably one of the most popular indoor locations in Winnipeg for weddings photos… mostly because it’s free to book, has a gorgeous architectural interior/exterior and is full of history and mystery. You guessed it: the Legislative Building.

My suggestions to wedding couples who are interested in having the Legislative Building as a location are:

1) book it as soon as you can (call 945-8750)

and

2) make sure your photographer is adept at interior portable flash lighting. The building can be quite dark in some locations, and to get great images, a good light or two is essential to getting those wow pictures.

Crystal & Jarrett – Engagement Photo Session at Assiniboine Park

If you live in Winnipeg, you might remember the day that the mosquito trap count soared to 1,300. It was all over the news. And yes, it happened to be the day that Crystal & Jarrett booked an engagement photo session with me. At Assiniboine Park, in the English Gardens, as the sun was setting, no less. And to top it, all three of us forgot to bring bug spray! Cancel the shoot? No way! It was a beautiful evening, golden light from the summer sun and a couple madly in love. It was perfect! Ok, minus the mosquitoes (which we couldn’t ignore). Poor Crystal – I spent quite some time in post production spot removing huge mosquito bite welts off her skin!

All I can say is that mosquitoes, as annoying as they were, cannot stop a session – it made for a memorable experience and I was happy to be able to laugh about it with the two of them. All the more reason to look forward to photographing their wedding next year. I know we’ll have fun and it’ll be a memorable day, no matter what happens!

Congratulations Crystal & Jarrett, I’m looking forward to what the summer of 2011 will bring. :)

Angelina’s getting married!

1048AA4504

It’s not very often that I get to be a guest at a wedding, and even less often when a long-term dear friend of mine gets married. Both happened last month, and I was overjoyed to be present at my good friend Angelina’s wedding. Angelina and I go way back, to our high school days, when we first met while having to find a locker-sharing partner. Angelina is one of those people that will tell you the honest truth (especially about clothing or shoes) and will laugh at you if you’re being ridiculous. She has kept me grounded over the years and her character is something that has shaped me along the way. And for that, I wouldn’t miss her big day for the world! Of course, I brought my camera along, and took a few pictures – especially because Angelina’s official photographer (the fabulous Candace Dunsire) was doubling as a bridesmaid and mother to a very young (and very cute) baby. Here are some highlights. Congratulations A & A! :)

Wedding Photography in Winnipeg: Stormy with beautiful skies!

1443TP0291-Edit

May & June has been busy with weddings, and I’m afraid to say it, but these past few months have felt a lot like the rainy stormy summer of 2009. I keep telling myself it’ll change once July rolls around, and in the mean time, I’ve been enjoying the great stormy blue clouds that this kind of weather can add to photos (as stressful as it might be). Theresa & Paul’s wedding photos worked out great: the storm clouds were looming, but held off long enough for us to get our shots before the downpour came. Theresa’s friends were super organized: umbrellas and even had the van pulled up ready to load us up before we got completely drenched. We then scooted over to my studio in the exchange district to take some more pictures while the rain poured outside. If you’re a bride or groom and in need of an alternate indoor location for your wedding in case of rain, consider my studio : it’s a great place to get out of the rain and still get some great wedding photos! (e-mail me for availability: photo @ egabrielle.com)

Congratulations to Theresa and Paul! When I met them last year, I knew we were going to be a good match. Easy-going, down to earth, and spunky, this couple even met me at one of my favourite coffee shops: Stella’s on Sherbrook. What more could I ask for? :) Duncan and I had a great time photographing their wedding. Here are some highlights!
