Tannis & Paul: Wedding Photography at the Gates

I had been looking forward to this wedding for some time, knowing that it would be set outdoors at the beautiful riverside grounds of the Gates with a couple whose style and passion I admired. They really wanted the true, natural essence of their day to come through with candid, sincere photos, and I too wanted nothing more than that. From the first time we met, I knew I absolutely wanted to work with them, and I’m sure glad they felt the same way too!

It was a gorgeous day (pretty hot though, although I’ll take the heat over a rained out day!), and I had my talented second photographer working with me, as usual. Thanks to Duncan McNairnay for doing a great job at capturing those great in-between moments and fly-on-the-wall shots. I’ve included a few of his shots below, as well as some of the highlights from my time with Tannis and Paul. Enjoy!

Crystal & Jarrett – Engagement Photo Session at Assiniboine Park

If you live in Winnipeg, you might remember the day that the mosquito trap count soared to 1,300. It was all over the news. And yes, it happened to be the day that Crystal & Jarrett booked an engagement photo session with me. At Assiniboine Park, in the English Gardens, as the sun was setting, no less. And to top it, all three of us forgot to bring bug spray! Cancel the shoot? No way! It was a beautiful evening, golden light from the summer sun and a couple madly in love. It was perfect! Ok, minus the mosquitoes (which we couldn’t ignore). Poor Crystal – I spent quite some time in post production spot removing huge mosquito bite welts off her skin!

All I can say is that mosquitoes, as annoying as they were, cannot stop a session – it made for a memorable experience and I was happy to be able to laugh about it with the two of them. All the more reason to look forward to photographing their wedding next year. I know we’ll have fun and it’ll be a memorable day, no matter what happens!

Congratulations Crystal & Jarrett, I’m looking forward to what the summer of 2011 will bring. :)

Photography and TV – featuring francophone artists of Winnipeg

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of working with a tv crew from Winnipeg’s own french film & tv production company, Les Productions Rivard, who also used to be my former employer. Working at Rivard Productions was an unforgettable experience and I’ll always treasure my time there – but a career in photography had a stronger pull on me, and alas, I had to let go of my job there to pursue what I do today. Needless to say, it was great to see some familiar faces and to work on a small piece for an episode of Viens Voir Ici (a national tv series that features francophones across Canada). The episode that I participated in also included other local francophone artists such as Andréanne Dandeneau (clothing designer extraordinaire) and the very popular and much-loved Bijou (amazing jewelry designers who happen to be very popular with a lot of my brides). The show’s host was decked out in Andréanne’s Voilà clothing line and jewelry by Bijou and I was her photographer for a mini fashion shoot at my studio and on Arthur Street. Thanks to the hard-working crew and enthusiasm of François, the director, we got some great shots and hopefully some great footage for the episode (set to air sometime in the Fall, on TVA). Photographic Art Exhibit at Winnipeg’s Cre8ery Gallery

Last week’s f/action photo exhibit at the Cre8ery gallery came to a close on Tuesday, and with it, all our prints came down. It was sad to dismantle it, but it had been a good few days of exhibiting our work we’d been working on for over a year and a half. Our “Made in China” exhibit drew several visitors and we were happy to share it with so many enthusiastic art-lovers. Even my dad, who needs art to be very literal and “normal” for him to understand it came out to see my abstract series! (though I think he preferred Dallas’ series of photographs from her trip to China).

My series explored the “made in China” phrase that reminds me of all the clothing I have in my closet – the disposable, cheap stuff I buy because it’s, well, cheap and easy to buy. Since knowing my husband, the idea of buying unethically made clothing has been on my mind a lot more, and work on this series brought me face to face with my closet and the origin of my clothes. I have to admit that I had a lot more clothing made in China than I realized, and to my shock, I pulled out a huge pile of it. My goal: to face it all, take it all, and create something dynamic and beautiful with it. I’m not big into finding trash and turning it into art – but this project felt a bit like that, and I was ok with it. I came face to face with the excess of clothing and material goods we seem to feel entitled to and I decided to make something productive with it, to make something I could hang on the wall and get inspired and moved by.

The result: a series of colourful shapes, lines and movement. I shot everything out of focus and with a slow shutter speed and made no rules about how to put it together. Everything came together as accidental beauties and the result actually did inspire and move me.
